twenty+3 projects is pleased to present universal shipping box, an exhibition of thirteen newly commissioned works from Argentina, Germany and Manchester each designed to fit into a medium sized pizza box. From globalism to science and travel to commercialism, the works in universal shipping box explore the ways artists understand the concept of the universal in the 21st Century.

universal shipping box in Manchester is the culmination of an exciting exchange between artists and curators from Argentina, Germany and the UK, which have included some shipping as well as exhibitions, events and discussions in Buenos Aires in May and in Berlin in July. Involved have been projektraumschwarz from Berlin, Red Nomade and Jardin Luminoso from Buenos Aires and Black Duck and twenty+3 projects from Manchester. universal shipping box has appreciated the generous support of the Arts Council England.

universal shipping box is a visual art and cultural exchange project between Manchester, Berlin and Buenos Aires, involving 5 artist-led arts organisations and 13 artists. The idea of the exchange is to connect contemporary artists and curators from Europe and South America to share fresh ideas and open up new possibilities for networking and future projects between the two continents.

universal shipping box es un intercambio artístico entre Manchester, Berlin y Buenos Aires, que involucra 5 organizaciones dirigidas por artistas y 13 creadores contemporáneos. Todas las obras de la exposición se ajustan a las medidas del tamaño de caja de pizza universal de 312mm x 312mm x 40mm.

Muchas religiones a nivel mundial comparten la noción del Amor Universal. El universalismo en la era moderna postulaba la idea de que todos formábamos parte de una “Humanidad” que compartía experiencias comunes tales como el nacimiento, la muerte o el trabajo.

El post-modernismo desacreditó este mito del universalismo creado por el pensamiento eurocéntrico y se concentró en las distintas maneras de experimentar la vida como consecuencia de las desigualdades de poder causadas por los acontecimientos sociales e históricos.

Hoy en día aceptamos que las personas experimentamos las vivencias de forma diferente dependiendo del lugar del mundo en que habitemos. Sin embargo en el siglo XXI estamos cada vez más influenciados con cosas como el capital mundial y el cambio climático global. De la misma manera y debido a la globalización, los gustos y la cultura de los consumidores comienzan a converger. Este intercambio artístico pretende interpretar el concepto de lo universal en el siglo XXI.

twenty+3 projects, directed by Heidi Schaefer is a contemporary art space in the converted front room of Heidi terraced house in Manchester, UK. It is an international space for exhibitions, discussions and residencies connecting artists from different parts of the world and Manchester.

Red Nomade, directed by Cristina Ghetti and Andrea Racciatti is an international cooperation project interested in the exchange of contemporary artists and intellectuals. The collective aim is to generate artistic, cultural and academic events in different cities in order to facilitate the meeting of visual artists, art critics, curators, writers and intellectuals.

black duck, directed by Ima Picó, is an organisation based in Manchester that undertakes international curatorial projects to promote the work of contemporary artists working in performance, installation, digital media and video.

Jardin Luminoso begins when Veronica Malenky, Lucila Malenky and Ariel Villareal get together to create luminic art. The gallery opens in 2006 in the neigbourhood of Palermo, Buenos Aires, gathering renowned artists and young talents. The goal is to offer a wider view of art, by means of dynamic and thematic exhibitions, and creating links in the world of national and international art.

Anne Charnock is a visual artist based in Manchester and London.

The Uncertainty Series is an ongoing body of work that reveals the doubts I experience during my art-making. I give solid form to these meandering and often contradictory thoughts by mimicking the ‘track changes’ function in word processing programs.

According to Michael Corris (1), the Uncertainty Series is ‘the story of authority rebuked, of certainty suspended, of an internal dialogue made manifest in the world . . . In one work, viewers find the sentence: “I don’t often believe my end-result is driven by my original idea.” As they stumble through strike-throughs, lose their way and retrace their steps, a conflicting sentence emerges: “I always have a clear idea that drives my practice.” . . . We read phrases that are, so to speak, false starts. We trip over ourselves, and in so doing rehearse Charnock’s ‘uncertainty.’

The Uncertainty Series reflects a long-standing interest in the opacity and indeterminacy of inscribed language. Underlying many of my works is my interest in digital technology. I watch for those everyday instances when technology ‘goes wrong’ – when printers malfunction, when data is corrupted. For example, I am also working at present with a malfunctioning digital camera to produce a set of distorted portraits.

Carson & Miller

Jonathan Carson & Rosie Miller have worked collaboratively as Carson & Miller since 2000. Their practice explores the impulse to tell and re-tell stories. Carson & Miller are particularly interested in non-linear and halted narratives. In recent work game playing has become an important method of narration; both of their own lives and those of others.

Carson & Miller experiment with audio and the spoken word, live game playing and collaborative drawing, as well as producing artists’ book and other printed matter.

This map documents the artists' experience of being away from home. In doing so it visualises a very personal geography of the Earth. The universality of the map is warped here to the particular experience of the artists, resulting in a presentation of the world with unexpected inclusions and omissions.

Heidi Schaefer is a visual artist whose work engages with history and its consequences in the present. It addresses war and colonialism and their expression in cultural and theoretical ideas as well as their meaning and consequences in history and art production.

The medium she uses, which has included drawing, sculpture, painting, text and video, follows from these ideas. All her work has a socio-political focus. The work can be ironic and irreverent or have a sense of uncertainty and dislocation. With this she hopes to open a space to the irrational, to other possibilities and new interpretations.

Heidi Schaefer also runs a gallery in the front room of her house in Manchester called twenty+3 projects. It has a mandate to show international and regional, non-commercial work.

Ima Picó

Ima Picó is a visual artist and digital muralist based in Manchester, UK. Her recent work explores media saturation in contemporary culture through the use of photography and digital manipulation. The photographic digital compositions are original photographs that have been further developed using digital tools. Picó’s recent work is installation based; the digital images are printed in big formats in order to cover entire walls. She has exhibited internationally in galleries and museums in solo and group exhibitions and organises exchanges with artists from different regions of Europe, America and Asia.

Andrea Racciatti was born in Rosario, Argentina and has a Visual Arts degree from the National University of Rosario. She co-ordinates with Cristina Ghetti the international project Red Nómade, a contemporary artistic and intellectual intervention collective. She works in painting, digital art and video art and has participated in national and international solo and group exhibitions since 1980, including: La Noche, Jacques Martínez Gallery, Buenos Aires, 2009. Cristina Ghetti, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she is currently living and working in Valencia, Spain. She is a visual artist and designer, developing her work in the fields of painting, photography and installations. She also works in digital animation. Licensed in Fine Arts by the “National School of BBAA P. Pueyrredón”, of Buenos Aires, and the Sant Carles's Fine Arts Faculty, Politechnical University of Valencia. She currently prepares a Master in Visual Arts & Multimedia at the Politechnic University of Valencia. She has obtained the Grant of the Mozarteum Intsitute for an art residence in the Cité Internationale des Arts, in Paris, France, and the Scholarship to the Creation in Visual Arts of the National Fundations of the Arts, Buenos Aires, to make studies of digital animation. She is the Director in Spain of Red Nomade, international cooperation project that promotes exchanges between Argentinian and European artists and intellectuals.

Lucila Malenky was born in Buenos Aires in 1975. Studies drawing and painting with Kenneth Kemble, Ana Tarsia and Carlos Gorriarena, among others and sculpture with Carlos Visconti and Claudia Aranovich. In 2000 obtains a B.A. Fine Arts in Central Saint Martins, London. She has exhibited her work in London and in Fundación Rozenblum, Madrid. In 2006 opens the art gallery Jardín Luminoso in Buenos Aires, with Ariel Villarreal and Veronica Malenky. Jardín Luminoso has participated in numerous Art Fairs, such as ArteBa.

Many world religions share the idea of a Universal Love. The universalism of the Modernist era suggested we were all a part of a ‘Mankind’ that shared experiences such as birth, death, work.

Post modernism debunked this universalism as a myth created by Eurocentric thinking and focussed on our different experiences of the world based on inequalities of power brought about by differing histories. We now accept that what we have in common is experienced differently in different parts of the world.

However, in the 21st century we are ever more affected and connected by global capital and global climate change, Also our experiences across the world are increasingly starting to converge as consumer tastes/culture in different places start to converge.

Is there a difference between the global and the universal? Can the idea of the universal be useful to us now?

Is universalism just a modernist utopian dream attached to the power of the dominant cultures?

Do claims for universality always relate to some project of domination?

How can the universal be interpreted now in the 21st century?

Some other thoughts about the universal:
The universal is all encompassing; is for everyone; is applied to everyone.
It can be cosmic (of the universe) and relate to things beyond our own world.
The universal encompasses ideas/projects such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
The universal is ubiquitous everywhere.
The universal is often associated with terms such as humanity, humankind. The universal is synonymous with commonality, total, all embracing.
We share 99% of our genes with Bonobo Apes.
